Has your sense of humor ever helped you on the job? Any examples? This is cheating a bit for this purpose, but humor is a big part of my job. I’m frequently asked to be a funny character or to find the humor in a piece of copy.

Ever used humor in a job search? Yes, when I audition to do voice work I often try to put an unexpected humorous twist in my read or acknowledge in some way, such as a verbal wink, the humor that the writer has put into the copy.

What’s your best advice for jobseekers?  Don’t apply just for jobs that are open. Apply to companies you’d really like to work for even if they don’t have openings. Many times I’ve seen and heard of a fresh resume and a yet unpublished job opening arriving at a decision maker’s desk simultaneously. Magic does happen.

What do you find funny and not funny about job search? Funny and sad at the same time are employers who don’t really know what they’re looking for in an employee, which can bring about funny and sad questions and decisions on their part. It makes our guessing game of “what do they want?” all the harder. It keeps you agile.

What do you do for a living?  I am primarily a copywriter/advertising creative and a voice over actor in San Francisco.

Has your sense of humor ever helped you on the job? Any examples? I’m pretty sure that my sense of humor has been the main thing I’ve had going for me for most of my life. When I was a young teenager, a bunch of thugs surrounded me with chains and knives and I got them laughing and they wound up leaving me alone. I’d like to think that much of my writing/ copywriting takes advantage of humor and in fact, when I was much, much younger, I did a stint as a stand-up comic. For a very short while (emphasis on short), I would get stage time ahead of Robin Williams. As a voice talent and a writer, I think I am somewhat recognized for my humorous approach.

Ever used humor in a job search? I don’t think there’s ever been a time where I haven’t at least tried to ease some tension or get the other person to smile. That goes for when I’ve been looking for work and also the one doing the hiring/evaluating.

What’s your best advice for jobseekers?  I think that job interviews and even exploratory calls and inquiries can be very tense for all the parties involved. I think that anybody who can get another person to smile and feel good, even for just a moment is going to do better than the person who pushes their resume over their personality.

What do you find funny and not funny about job search? Well, if you think about my life, always looking for my next gig, then every voice over audition I do, submission from an RFP or inquiry I follow up on is like a job interview. My whole life is a job search. Given the fact that so much of my time is involved in searching for jobs, I’ve come to embrace it. It’s just part of the journey.

What do you do for a living? I am a Desktop Engineer Associate for Cook Childrens Medical Center. I am also an ordained minister currently doing ministry at the Johnson County Jail.

Has your sense of humor ever helped you on the job? I have done customer service for many years and try to inject some humor in every contact. When I have to wait for a password to authenticate I ask the user to tell me their favorite limerick or sing the first verse of their favorite song since I do not have hold music. Most won’t sing and I had to censor one limerick reminding them we are being recorded.

Ever used humor in a job search? Only if I felt that it fit into the interview, but most interviewers have been stern to austere so I don’t try to break down their facade.

What’s your best advice for jobseekers? Relax, be yourself unless you crazy then you may wish to assume another role.

What do you find funny and not funny about job search? The mind game. I have gotten jobs where I felt like I had never been in the career field and have not gotten jobs where I knew I could be an asset. Once spent an hour on the phone and never felt so stupid in my life and got the job. If you are not aggressive some think you lack confidence and if you are confident some think that is a bad thing. Interviewing is my weakness because I do not play the mind game very well.

What do you do for a living?  I am an Area Coach for Pizza Hut in Corinth, TX.

Has your sense of humor ever helped you on the job? I use humor every day in my professional life.  Nothing relieves stress like a good laugh!

Ever used humor in a job search? I once went on an interview during which I found out somebody I had dated years ago worked there.  They asked me what she would say about me if asked.  I told them (laughingly) that the interview was over and that I would just save them time and leave.  Everybody laughed and we went forward.  I did get that job!

What’s your best advice for jobseekers?  It is the law of averages.  You will get many “no’s” before you get that one “yes”.  Keep pushing!  Your job right now is to get a job.  Do your work every day.

What do you find funny and not funny about job search? Job searching can be stressful and that is not funny, but keep yourself together, stay calm, stay relaxed and let your lighter side guide you.

What do you do for a living?
I was a high school science teacher for seven years, but I am currently a full-time graduate student in nursing school.

Has your sense of humor ever helped you on the job?
When teaching a difficult subject like science to high school students, I used to employ humor into my lessons to keep the kids interested. I would also tell a
joke before a test to put my students at ease and to get rid of some of the pre-test jitters.

Ever used humor in a job search?
Yes, making myself laugh when the job search looked bleak helped me on my quest for a new job.

What’s your best advice for jobseekers?
Stay positive. Your dream job is out there, so do not give up!  And change careers if you have to in order to find your dream!

I find it hilarious the dismal salaries that teachers get paid.

My name is Karen Denton and I live in Florence, no, not Italy, a small town in western Ma. I am currently building a business, Green Natured where I am selling my photographs, photo art (graphically transformed photos), as well as custom made greeting cards, mostly online. I am in the process of developing the website. I am also employed with a  tutoring service where I do in house tutoring in English as a second language, and Math, for students grades k-12.

Humor is something I use all the time to keep my students attention and to make learning fun.

I once went into a job interview where a panel of five were seated, and within thirty seconds, had them all laughing. I didn’t get the job, but I got a few laughs.

What’s your best advice for jobseekers?
My best advice for job seekers is Think Positively! Don’t Give Up! and Don’t Be Afraid to try Something New! and yes, Follow Your Dreams!

What do you find funny and not funny about job search?
I find some of the headlines for jobs amusing, like We’ll send you a kit so you can work from home, free with purchase.
