Fort Hays State University was founded in 1902 as the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School. The institution was originally located on the grounds of Fort Hays, a Nineteenth Century frontier military outpost. The state of Kansas initially intended the university’s academic programs to focus on agriculture, but it opened in as a “normal” or teacher’s college.

OFFICE OF HUMAN RESOURCE MISSION STATEMENT

The Office of Human Resources at Fort Hays State University is dedicated to all employees and provides the tools needed to support development and optimize successes. The office is made up of three areas: Human Resource Management, Employee Relations and Institutional Equity.

Human Resource Management provides current and potential employees with compensation and benefits guidance. Services include but are not limited to new hire onboarding, appointment processing, compensation, and benefit administration. Benefits consist of health insurance, retirement planning, life and disability insurance, and employee tuition assistance, among others.

Employee Relations is committed to creating a healthy organizational climate in which employees are valued stakeholders with the power to affect outcomes. The Employee Relations' philosophy at Fort Hays State University encourages mutual responsibility for constructive work relationships and communication; information sharing; problem solving; and a safe, neutral process through which differences can be managed.

An employee's success is largely dependent on support systems which foster strong and trusting work relationships. These essential supports are found within employee/supervisor relationships, employee/peer (or team) relationships and employee/university relationships. In each of these relationships, support is taking time and being responsive; support is listening, seeking clarity and problem solving; and support is assuming responsibility.

Resources to promote this support are available to all staff and include educational and instructional materials, consultation and group facilitation services, dispute resolution and grievance procedures. The Office of Employee Relations is available to provide confidential help with work-related issues.
