About
Lumin Education was founded in 1978 with the belief that all children, regardless of race or income, can succeed in school and life when we “start young and involve parents.”
From humble beginnings of educating a single class of eight children in a donated space to an expansion that now includes three campuses, serving inner-city children through parent education and daily classroom programs, Lumin Education remains committed to lifting up Dallas communities through one simple idea: education.
We believe that taking an active interest in students and parents pays dividends. We believe in connecting communities and providing resources that grow healthy families and students and ultimately vibrant communities.
From pregnancy to third grade, Lumin Education is invested in building thriving, self-sustaining families and helping each student achieve his or her potential. Our programs impact over 600 children and their families each year.
Lumin serves the Dallas, Texas neighborhoods of Old East Dallas, and the Bachman Lake neighborhood; two high-need areas of Dallas where the issues of poverty, illiteracy, and high dropout rates are prevalent. Lumin students have a 96% high school graduation rate compared to 72% in the same neighborhood, and 89% of Lumin students attend college, compared to 56% in the same neighborhood.
Our Philosophy
Lumin Education is guided by the Montessori philosophy of education. This philosophy is rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori’s conviction, which has been confirmed by our own experience, that, unless severely impaired, “children naturally have the same drive to develop in a cognitive sense as they do in a physical sense. The desire of an elementary student to master equivalent fractions can be just as strong as the desire of the infant to crawl, unless the desire has been diminished by the circumstances of the child’s life.”
